The Art of Perspective: Believing is Seeing

The Art of Perspective: Believing is Seeing

It’s not what you see, but how you see that matters most. It’s human nature to complain, criticize, and focus on the negative. For instance, when I woke up this morning, the sky was covered with falling snow and there was a thin layer of slush on the streets. Immediately I started thinking about how the prospect of snow could potentially ruin my day. It’s so easy to go there.

In his famous “Sermon on the Mount”, Jesus said this…

“The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!

The lamp Jesus is referring to is perspective. It’s not what you see, but how you see. If you are in touch with the reality that God is for you, going ahead of you, and is a constant source of blessing in your life, your entire body will be flooded with light. The word Healthy in the original Greek language implies generosity. Conversely, the word unhealthy implies stingy. In other words, allow what you see to be a blessing to yourself and those around you. Don’t let a negative perspective cause you to hold back from yourself, or withhold from others.

Here’s the key. We have to constantly remind ourselves of God’s goodness in order to see correctly. It’s easy to forget. It only takes an adverse circumstance, a negative conversation, or a moment of weakness to steer us right for the gutter again. So, what can you do about it? Have you exposed yourself to the light of the world today? That would be a good place to start!
