Update from the Slums of Nairobi
Just a month ago a young man in our church and I started a fellowship of "SLUM FAMILIES" - comprising of some of the poorest, drugged, sick and desperate people of the world.
Now our slum-based, poverty-alleviating, Evangelistic outreaches have risen to 3. Working to the Glory of God.
Together with a young man from our church Joe (not the plumber), we have founded a"FELLOWSHIP FOR SLUM FAMILIES" - as a project situated in Bahati area of Nairobi. It has a membership of about 50 individuals mainly young people struggling with drugs and abject poverty. We have put in place morning breakfast fellowships, life skills, inspirational talks and counseling sessions with them. In these times of great hunger and famine that hit the country, we try to give them monthly food rations to help fight off starvation. We are also thinking of more ministry and social possibilities for these young people of the new "50-Christian" church.
After "kissing" the conditions in the Slums- you just want to be there; you barely can let go...and for me I am just availing to be used of God...for how long? I don't know. What I know is that through our small contributions God is saving souls and building His kingdom.
I have been personally involved in ministries both with Masaai and Somali communities- both targeting the emancipation and development of girls. In both ministries, I served as a teacher, trainer and evangelist. I am in touch with the people in Massai land - who have set up a school facility to empower young Masaai girls and keep them away from forceful circumcision (i.e., genital mutilation). The girls are brought up in a Christian set up and built up in faith. The ministry has also done a lot of church planting into "deep Masaai" land and with tremendous results.
In Somali, we were undertaking a similar mission with yet another ministry...a very risky venture and yet noble. The ministry was principally enlisted to teach ENGLISH language/Culture to young Somali girls due for repatriation to Western countries...and it is in the process of doing this that we did evangelism to them (clandestinely).
The trick here is; most Somali people believe the English language and Christianity belong to one heritage and it would do them good to know about the God /Worship of the WEST..(they would take anything that would help them go to Europe/USA) And this is how we came in. We did it four times in 2 years and believe me you; quite a number gave their lives to the LORD and are still standing somewhere in the US, UK etc. We have halted, but not bolted a bit.
Please know that we appreciate every support we get all our friends there. Without your resource inputting our desire to work for the suffering families would just be a wishful thinking. Our experience is that not so many people go to the length of sharing resources to intervene and yet we must continue appreciating the LOVE and PRAYER support they give. You are exceptional.
I am really excited about serving God...working and thinking and doing anything that will build the Kingdom gives me great joy. I am crazy about the Gospel; mad at the devil.
Blessings,
Osborn
