Genesis 2:24

Deborah and I just returned from a five day pastor's conference in sunny Southern California.  The trip was great, however, we returned home to a war zone.  All four of our kids have had the flu and on Tuesday, Deborah was hit with it.  It's weeks like this that really test a marriage.  Ironically, we're in the middle of a series at Westside called “The Vow”.  This week I put together a suggested reading plan to go deeper into God's word and explore further his plan for marriage.  Wow, I really needed that this week.

Today's reading was Genesis 2:24.  “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united with his wife, and the two will become one flesh.”  For all of the complicated problems we experience in our modern day marriage relationships, it's amazing that the Bible can bring a solution to all of them in one verse.  Is it not the disease of selfishness that seeks to eat away at the one flesh relationship?

So, let's take my week for example.  My wife is at home with sick kids and she calls to inform me she might need some help because she is feeling nauseous herself.  My instant reaction is to get frustrated about how this is going to affect me.  I have so many important things to accomplish.  They are God sized problems.  After all, I'm a pastor.  It's a heaven or hell issue.  Seriously, I'm that important!  Don't worry, I did the right thing.  I went home and relieved her of the burden of children.  I even tried to do it with a good attitude, but underneath it all, I was desperately wrestling my selfishness into submission.

So, today I'm reading Genesis 2.  God, what does it mean to have a one flesh relationship with my wife?  Simple!  When she's sick, you're sick.  Seriously, I think I'm coming down with something.
